I am going to have to replace my HD for my 8100 and was wondering if there wasany info on doing this.  Dell sent me the install disk and the driver disk.  Is it as simple as just hooking it up and running the install disk?  It is a 1tb hd.

XPS 8700 SATA ports 2/3/4 not seeing added Blu-Ray writer

I purchased an XPS-8700 (16GB RAM / 2TB HD) from Costco on-line and received it on Friday.

While waiting for it to arrive, I had ordered three items for it:

Plextor PX-256M5M mSATA SSD

LG WH14NS40 Blu-Ray writer

Windows 7 64 bit Professional (not a fan o0f Windows 8)

I installed the SSD and it is working fine.

I then installed the LG Blu-Ray writer in the ODD1 slot and connected the cable to SATA port 2. After booting the system I was a bit surprised to not see the added Blu-Ray writer.

I then tried reversing the SATA cables going to ODD0 and ODD1. Now the LG Blu-Ray writer is there, but not the supplied DVD writer. Thinking the new SATA cable might be bad, I reversed the cables with no changes in drives present.

I then tried connecting the added drive to SATA 3 and SATA 4 with no luck.

From what I can tell, both the new LG Blu-Ray writer and SATA cable are both fine as they work when connected to SATA 1.

Neither the supplied DVD/CD writer nor the added Blu-Ray writer work on SATA ports 2, 3, or 4.

I assume (and we all know where that leads) that the second optical disc drive is supported as the upper two bays are labeled ODD0 and ODD1.

Any ideas as to what is needed to get the XPS-8700 to recognize an ODD on SATA ports 2 - 4?

Thanks in advance,

Ed

Dell XPS 8700 slow shutdown/restart-Need Assistance

Hi everyone..my Dell XPS 8700 has 8gb of RAM and a 1TB hard drive..is the Core i7 processor. I purchased this computer on September 20th 2013, everything has been fine until recently..when I noticed that my computer was taking about 3 minutes to shut down and restart..called Dell, talked to about 10 different technicians and NO ONE knew the cause..so I came here and saw someone post about the bluetooth driver update on December 13th that was causing him to have the same issue, so I called Dell and they removed the driver update and rolled it back to June 2013 and everything worked, this was a few days ago that this was done..I thought the issue was resolved..a Dell technician even came to my house with a new motherboard because I thought that was the problem, he determined after a few boot ups and shut downs that the motherboard was fine, that I didnt need one so I didnt get it installed..now two days later, its doing it ALL OVER AGAIN, same issue, same problem..takes 2 minutes and 20 seconds to shut down and restart and I have NO idea what this is. I didnt install anything these past few days to make this happen, I thought this issue was done with and now its happening again..Dell is sending a motherboard replacement but I really have no idea if that is the problem or something else. Ive dealt with computers for 15+ years and never had a piece of software that would cause a computer not to shut down right away..so if anyone here can help me figure out what the problem is I would really really appreciate it

Thank U

Bluetooth and wireless failure after win 8.1 upgrade

Hi

I recently purchased (Dec 31, 2013) an XPS 8700, i7 4700, 16 GB, 650 Ti 1GB, 2 TB HDD, 32 GB Msata. I upgraded to Win 8.1 and upgraded my BIOS to A06 as recommended on the Dell website. I also did install all the other recommended chipset, Digital Delivery, IRST, Intel AMT HECI. Foxconn Icon manager application and network (Realtek) drivers. The divers for Intel Centrino 6235 and bluetooth drivers did not install indicting that a more recent version is already installed.

I failed to notice a few issues initially since I have a wired internet connection active. Since the upgrade, the wireless and Bluetooth doesn't seem to work. I then disabled the wless and Bluetooth and then uninstalled them from control panel. I then installed the drivers from the dell site which installed proper but still I cannot connect to my wless nor does my GNote 3 discover the xps and vice versa. Intel Centrino driver installed now is version 15.10.3.2 released 8/22/2013.

Moreover after xps boots, the IRST icon does not appear for a long time on the status bar and it does take around a minute for it to appear. When it appears it has a blue ring and indicates that the IRST service has not started yet. In another minute or so the icon gets a green tick mark and indicates that IRST is working now. Why the delay?

Kindly help me to troubleshoot this..If possible can anybody advise me how to uninstall all the drivers and install them in the correct sequence, since I have a feeling that i might not have installed them in the correct order.

I would appreciate any suggestions and advise..kinldy help me to troubleshoot this situation!

Thanks and regards

Anil

XPS 8700 motherboard and mSATA SSD

Are there any differences in the motherboards between the regular XPS 8700 and the Special Edition 8700?   Or all the differences in the configurations of the add-on hardware (memory, hard disk, graphics card, SSD, etc.)?

If I purchase a non-special edition 8700, and I want to add a mSATA SSD, are there any particular brands or specifications I need to consider for the SSD to be compatible?

I appreciate any help you can provide.

BIOS Upgrade

Hi all,

I have a Dell i620-3791BK desktop computer, and according to my support page my BIOS needs upgrading. I downloaded the .exe file to my desktop, booted into Windows 7 safe mode and attempted to flash the BIOS from there, but I got an error message...

Redirect console error:  2

In addition, a box with a red X popped up and said...

GetMeVersion, Error, GetLastError=2

I have never flashed a BIOS from within a Windows environment, but Dell tech support said I could. But obviously that didn't work.

Comments appreciated.

Thanks.

Everything was working fine, then when I shut down the PC, the "shutting down" message stayed on the screen and it did not shut down.  I finally manually powered it down..  now, I power on, the PC does nothing..  doesn't seem to see the keyboard, USB devices  are recognized, etc.  Power light is on, but nothing else..  is this likely a mother board issue?

Help With Video Card for my optiplex 3010

Hello,

I am trying to figure out wwhich graphic card will fit into my basic dell optiplex 3010. I opened the case and tried to figure out where to put the card but it looks like it has to be a certain type of card to fit into the slots because the opening in the back is slightly set to the side which means certain cards wont fit.

So I was wondering if there is a specific card of type of card, I am looking at something like a Nivida gforce, that will fit the slot and work with this machine. Any help will be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Archie.

Opti 9020s with Intel I217-LM nics causing network issues

$

I have 9 Optiplex 9020 towers with Intel I217-LM nics.  When they are connected to my network, eventually the network suffers severe latency issues, making some of it unusable.  The problem disappears immediately when I disconnect the 9020s.  Problem is somewhat intermittent, resolution varies.  Usually unplugging any 3 or 4 of the workstations is sufficient for a while, but the remaining workstations eventually cause the same network problems.  I have isolated the problem to the workstations themselves by using different switches and physically moving the workstations to different wiring.

I have tried multiple fixed IPs as well as DHCP.  I have reimaged the systems, with only Win7 Pro and Windows updates installed, including the latest Intel drivers, the issue remains.  Dell support advised a BIOS version patch, and drivers off dell.com instead of windows update (an earlier version), but I don't hold much hope that will resolve the issue, as the BIOS patch has no network card changes, and I've tried multiple drivers already.

I've noticed the issue can occur while the workstations are "asleep," so I've turned off "respond to ARP requests without waking system" and couple similar sleep related settings.  Still waiting to see if that had any effect.

Any advice, correction, things to try, or even just sympathy would be most welcome!  Thanks for reading.

New Dell XPS 8300 constantly Locking up.. help

$

Hi, I bought and received a new XPS 8300 last week... Intel Core i5-2300, 8 GB RAM... having big problems right off the bat.

The computer will periodically completely freeze, rendering the mouse + keyboard useless, and the only way to get out of it is to do a hard reboot (hold power button for 5 seconds to turn off, then turn on again). There's no blue screen of death, rather the image on the monitor just freezes. This is happening upwards of once every hour, which is completely unacceptable. There's no apparent trigger, it occurs while I'm on the Internet, while I'm in MS office, while the screen saver is on, etc.

At first I thought it could be a driver problem with the monitor (my own Samsung, not from Dell), but I installed the correct drivers and it still occurs. Then I figured it could be malware (even on a new computer), but a thorough scan revealed nothing. I'm now concerned that this is a CPU heat issue, and have taken to temporarily putting a full-size fan in front of the tower case, which is already well-ventilated. This has apparently slowed down the frequently of the hangs, but they still arise. I have already installed a few programs and transferred a few files, and really don't want to go through the hassle of returning the case to Dell for weeks on end.

Any thoughts? Anyone having similar problems? This is maddening.

I am not sure how to articulate my frustration with Dell without delving into the lower levels of invective, although this would perhaps be just given the tremendous abyss I find myself falling into whenever I speak with a Dell representative. People who are so clearly removed from the daily operations and are utterly powerless to do anything except apologize.

Your byzantine corporate structure is such that I am not even sure whom I should contact to complain - is it here? Maybe?

I order a computer January 3rd and I am now being told I might (but not really sure) receive it by February 15th. This is ridiculous and I know you are likely as equally lacking in any real power to rectify this, but I have now spoken with 7 separate dell reps - 7 for 1 computer. They were all nice but as useless as a watch without a battery - at least a broken watch is right twice a day. I suspect it is a yearly occurrence with your staff, not out of a lack of intelligence, but Dell's apparent lack of customer-centric culture and commitment to ensure their employees and contractors receive sufficient training and are empowered to resolve problems. I have sent several e-mails and chatted in with a few employees - it was only today (and I still believe this was a mistake) that I was told that there was a problem with your supply chain - a fact I was not exactly shocked to hear given my experience with your company. This after several e-mails that were sent to me by a "donotreply" address telling me (in French when my obvious language of preference is English) that you apologize for a delay and that I may get a computer some time soon. I was offered a 100$ credit (although the rep refused to send me an e-mail so I will believe that when I see it...).

Well, I can go on in the narrative style...but I think a bullet point should suffice from here

1. Ordered January 3rd

2. Dell loses order

3. Dell fails to contact me about lost order
, even though customer service rep tells me "we lost that one I can see it here"

4. 3 hours later - in the middle of huge debate between sales and customer service over who could do what - was told to go to chat - whereby I would ask them both the same question and they would (8/8 times) reply to me that it was the other team's problem

5. I give up.

6. Order is placed mysteriously.

7. I hoot with glee January 9

8. I begin to doubt Dell

9. I receive missive 1 in French just saying "apologies but we do not know when\where your computer is

10. I send an e-mail asking for clarification

10b. receive missive 2 saying "oops still don't know where that computer is"

11. No response 6 days

12. Login to chat this morning

13. Wait 19 minutes

14. Elisha says "apologies, no computer until February....maybe.

15. Write this plaintive missive on my slowly deteriorating dell that is just past its 3 year warranty.,

A few questions about upgrading my graphics card - Dell XPS 8300

Hello everyone, i have been contemplating changing my video card for some time now but haven't really looked up specifics..

Currently, i would want to put an Geforce GTX 650 ( This ) inside of my existing computer of which i am told meets the minimum power supply required in order to use this particular card

What i'm worried about is I have read a few forums about BIOS issues with the XPS 8300 and i also am not sure if the card will fit in the original case provided by dell.

Thanks in advance.

Control panel/user accounts and family safety/credential manager

When I click on START/Control panel/user accounts and family safety/credential manager I find a credential I didn't put there "ARMY". I keep removing it but it keeps coming back. Being an advocate of Veterans Rights and a past Commander of the VFW I'm a bit paranoid how a credential call "ARMY' won't go away.

Does anyone have any information on Control panel/user accounts and family safety/credential manager, this is a brand new Dell Desktop and I know I didn't put a credential like "ARMY" in this computer. Confused

Thanks in advance,

Bill

I have a Studio XPS 9000 with A16 bios. For some strange reason, I am unable to disable the onboard lan controller. When I enter the bios setup screen and change the setting to disabled and save changes and exit, the onboard lan continues to stay enabled. I tried everything. Is anyone else experiencing this issue?
