Unfortunately since that was in 2002 I now have a clean install of XP Media Center Edition version 200 2 SP2 and I.E. version 6.0. When I try to go to the internet (I have a connection) to update XP and I.E. I get an error message (I The page cannot be displayed ....cannot find server or DSN Error internet explorer. Any ideas on how to get out of this catch 22?

How to move WIN10 operating system to onboard SSD? Or should I?

I just received my XPS8900 with 2TB HDD and 256GB SSD (which is mounted to the M.2 slot on the motherboard. I anticipated Dell would have loaded the Windows 10 operating system on the SSD... but that was not the case. How do I migrate the operating system over to the SSD? or should I? Everything I see listed seems to mention migrating to a SSD that connects with the SATA cable used by the original HDD.

I have updated the BIOS, made the recovery USB, system image file & repair disk.

Main use of this PC is for use with Adobe Lightroom, Photos, MSOffice, Internet, etc. No gaming, TV, etc. Any advice is very welcome!

XPS 8700, PCIe SSD, and the not really a PCIe x4 question

All,

Ok, so I've seen this thread:

http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/desktop/f/3514/t/19536759

and I understand that the PCIe slot that looks like a PCIe x4 is really only wired for PCIe x1.

What I don't understand is why it's as slow as claimed.  As I understand it, SATA 3.0 SSDs max out around the low to mid 500s MB/s,

But, PCIe x4 SSDs can go significantly faster.

HOWEVER, given that

  • SATA 3.0 max ~ 600MB/s
  • PCIe x1 3.0 max ~ 980MB/s

then shouldn't a PCIe SSD, even crippled by being plugged into this bogus x4 slot, still be able to outpace a SATA SSD? by around 50-60%?

However, what I've read suggests that such an arrangement with the PCIe x1 that looks like a x4 actually underperforms the SATA SSD.

Why is that the case?

Yea, I know this is kind of ridiculous but it is possible as any other monitor is able to get 60hz with DP 1.2, mind you this is enabled. I've tried many methods.

Right now, I'm on 2k at 60hz.

Dell monitor is UP1414Q

Enable NumLock on Start - Windows 10 - Dell Inspiron Desktop

How do you enable the NumLock when you start a Dell Inspiron Desktop running Windows 10?

I have edited the Registry value for "InitialKeyboardIndicators" to 2147483650. After powering down and restarting, NumLock is still not on.

Do I have to disable "Fast Startup", too?

I accessed the BIOS menu on startup, but did not see any option for the Keyboard settings - unless I missed it.

Thanks,

Bart

Inspiron 3647 - is there a comprehensive list of CPUs supported?

$

So, I have an Inspiron Small Desktop (3647) currently with the Pentium G3220 CPU.

I'm considering going with an i3, since the power draw is approximately the same, and I could thus re-use the same heatsink.

The specifications document merely states that Celeron, Pentium, and i3/i5/i7 4th generation are supported, but no further detail than that.

My immediate question:  While I've seen the 3647 offered with the i3-4160 and i3-4170, does the system support the i3-43xx CPUs?

How about the various Haswell i3/5/7 CPUs with S, T, and TE at the end of the model number?  I'd possibly be interested in some of those for the purposes of reduced power consumption.

Ideally, is there some definitive list of every processor this computer supports?

Thanks!

Drive replacement procedure

How do I remove the front bezel of my Dell Precision 380 work station in order to replace the non-working optical drive?  The old DVD-RW drive must come out thru the front of the case due to its length.

Dell Support no longer lists the related Users Guide, and the Quick Reference Guide immediately crashes each time I try to load and view it.

Seems Dell changes case design with each new model as the 380 is different than the 350, etc. to keep things interesting - and frustrating.

Precision 3620 hang

I've been setting up a Precision 3620.  Everything worked well for about 3 days.  The last step was populating user data from an external drive via USB.   When I returned to the machine the copy had finished, but programs wouldn't launch - for example Firefox said that it was already running, but the process didn't even show in task manager.   Some sort of Dell "Command update" window was flashing.

A reboot just resulted in a hung desktop: the hourglass showed on the task bar and nothing could be selected.  Task manager hung with a blank window.

I still had the firewall on, so I couldn't attach with event viewer from another computer.   But I did have a drive mapped.  I saw some Windows Update activity logged, but couldn't see if it was just checking or if there was an actual update.

I'm giving up and resetting to the factory OS.

All this just to compare notes in case it turns out to be a bad Windows or Dell update.   I'll definitely checkpoint the install.

Oh, and the Boot CD wouldn't recognize the Bitlocker recovery key even though the Bitlocker ID matched.   Guess I'll have to go without Bitlocker on that PC.

Complete beginner - help needed on how to install SSD in Optiplex 3020

Some help please as I want to install an SSD in my PC and use it in place of the existing HDD

Where and how should it be mechanically installed?

Besides the SSD what else will I need?

Do I need a caddy if so which one ?

Will the data cable be from the motherboard or the existing HDD?

Will the power be looped from the HDD power - if so which cable will I need?

Are slave and master settings needed?

Thanks

USB Ports not working and no PS2 ports available

All USB ports on my Dell Inspiron 530 stopped working and therefore no keyboard or mouse control available to work on recovery.  Is there any way to work around this problem? Although the computer was updated to Windows 7 Pro some time ago, I do still have both the Win 7 discs and the OEM discs that came with the computer. Any suggestions?

XPS 8900 will not boot up with first power on

$

I recently purchased a XPS 8900 w/2GB NVIDIA GeForce GTS 960 Graphics card and a S2716DG 27" Monitor.  When the computer has been turned off for a long period of time, the computer will not boot up without pushing the power on button again which turns off computer.  Pushing power on button again will boot up the computer.  The monitor shows a notice that it is going into a power down mode when the button is pushed the first time.  If you turn off the computer and then restart it works as it should.

Another issue I have is that the system will not wake up after several minutes of being in the sleep mode.  It will work up if you try to wake it up within a few minutes.

Any help would be appreciated.  I have spent several hours with Dell techs on other issues that have been resolved, but these have not been solved.

I am almost ready to return this computer system to Costco.
