Dimension E510 won't start - lights 1,3,4, no POST

Hi guys, I've got a six year old e510 that is getting stuck at the very start of the boot process. It is in some sort of loop. It is the sounds that the computer would normally make right after you press the power button- fans kicking on and that noise from the dvd drive. It does that over and over. (I'll post a video at the bottom because I know this description is vague.) There is nothing on the screen. At the same time, diagnosis lights 3 and 4 are on steady, while 1 is blinking. I read in the manual that 3 and 4 are memory related, and I've taken out each module and tested one at a time. That made no difference. I've got 2x2gb of dell memory in there that i upgraded a few years ago. I also replaced the power supply with a 500W unit (upgrade from stock 305W) earlier this year when I had the blinking amber power light.

Also, sometimes, instead of going into the loop issue I described above, it will simply have the amber power light issue, and not get into the boot process at all, nothing on the screen.

Any other ideas guys? I'm hoping its not a bad motherboard or something like that. I appreciate any help!! Thanks!

A video of the issue:  http://youtu.be/2LbCNJboDO8

The fan noise is the gpu. The fan has always been loud on it, but shouldn't be kicking on/off like that. I might pull it out next to see if it is the issue.

Studio XPS 8500 mobo change

Hi,

I'm planning to change the stock motherboard that came with the computer, because of the lack of functionality, expandability, etc (ie. only 1 SATA 3 port, pci expansion slot is useless because it's under the graphics card, not pci-e 3.0). The mother i have in mind is a ASUS Maximus V Gene ( http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/Intel_Socket_1155/Maximus_V_GENE/#overview ).

I'd appreciate advices of hardware compatibility (mounting layout, RAM and CPU compatibility, etc.), or comments of somebody who have already done something similar.

thanks very much for your time.

Regards,

Alejandro.

Power supply failure

I got an XPS8100 about 2 years ago in Canada (110V) and brought it
to Sweden (220V) recently. Unfortunately I was too careless to plug in the power cord
without checking the voltage. Of course the PC doesn't work anymore. But I
still hope that it's only the power box that was destroyed and nothing else.

Please help:

- What really happened to the CPU? Was it only the power
that was burnt, or all the CPU is damaged now?

- If it's only the power is destroyed, what can I do now,
can I buy the new power supply part from Dell, and where/how to buy it?

- Any other suggestions that you can help.

Thank you.

Determining HD

Hi,

Forgive my ignorance but I have to ask this newby question.

My PC is OptiPlex-Gx520. What kind of HD is built in?

I've changed the original XP OS to W7, nothing else .

I'm handicapped so phisically unable to do the checking.

Is there any other way?

Thank you

Removal of McAfee SecurityCenter Trial Program Causes Failure of PowerChute (PCPE) Install

Recently I had a problem installing APC's PowerChute Personal Edition on
my new Dell XPS 8500.  It appears the origin of the problem was days
before when I removed via the Windows Control Panel (apparently without
errors) a 30-day trial copy of McAfee SecurityCenter.  Dell had put that
program on my PC; I wanted Norton Internet Security instead.  For
details and a solution which worked for me, see

Upgrading my desktop

I have a Dell Inspiron 620 and I am looking to upgrade my power supply unit and video card. Now i found what I think I want but I do not know if it is compatible with my system and I do not want to go through the hassle of getting the wrong thing.

I found a Cooler Master eXtreme Power Plus 500w Power Supply (RS500-PCARD3-US) for my PSU.

And a Sapphire Radeon HD 7750 1GB DDR5 HDMI / DVI-I / DP PCI-Express Graphics Card 11202-00-20G for my video card.

But I am not sure if they are compatible and I have no idea how to check. Could someone help me out and tell me if this are the right things i need?!

Thank You

Optiplex GX 620 beeping after POST

We have an Optiplex GX 620 Small Form Factor that is beeping. It boots fine (XP SP3) and runs without issue, but it's beeping. A steady series of even beeps, about one per second. Have searched high and low for an answer, but nothing so far matches this behavior. This is NOT a beep code issue. It is after POST and after Windows loads. Doesn't even need to be logged in, and the beeps start. Same for several different keyboards and mice. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

XPS 200 - Problems updating BIOS A03 to A07

I recently replaced my motherboard with a dell-refurbished board on my XPS-200 desktop, which works fine however; I would like to update the BIOS from A03 to A07.  My previous motherboard was A07.   In trying to run the exe BIOS file from Dell as administrator and from win-XP I am getting the message I am running a non supported system.  Can someone offer me some help on this as it has already taken me days playing round with it.  I actually went back to XP from Vista as I had read there was an issue with Vista.

Optiplex 3010 with third party RAID controller

$

Hi,

I installed an Adaptec 1220SA RAID controller in an Optiplex 3010 and have two HDD's attached to it. There aren't any drives connected directly to the motherboard. Neither the RAID card nor the drives attached to it are visible in BIOS, so they can't be chosen as boot devices.

The machine starts OK, goes thru the initialization of the RAID controller OK, but then it stops with a 'No hard disk drives detected' warning, giving 3 choices: continue, go to bios, go to the self test utility.

However, if F1 (Continue) is pressed, it boots up perfectly from the RAID drives and everything works as expected.

Any ideas how to get rid of that error/warning message?

Hi

Over the last week or so the power on button on my Dell Precision 690 is starting to get more difficult to press.  Today I cannot power on PC as it has become completely jammed.  It looks like I am going to have to remove it.  Does anybody know exactly how to do this as its not in any of the users documentation.

Would really appreciate any help as I need to get PC back up and running.

Thanks

Inspiron 531 - How to clear CMOS Battery Failed Message

$

I've replaced the CMOS battery on my Dell Inspiron 531 and the system date and time now show as correct, however on boot up it still goes to the error screen with 'CMOS battery failed' message and request to click F1 to boot or F2 for system set-up. In the manual for the 531 it tells you to go to the 'Maintenance Section' in the system setup and clear the errors in the 'Event Log'. There is no 'Maintenence Section' and hence no 'Event Log'. Any ideas on how I access and clear the errors so my machine boots up cleanly?  Thx.

I have an Optiplex 745 ultra-small form factor unit. It has been giving us a "Hard Drive Fan Failure" error occasionally. It doesn't appear that the fan has completely died, because I hear it run for a while, and then it stops. What should I do about it?

Drive Self-Test (DST) log contains previous error(s)

$

I'm seeing an error code when I runa Pre-Boot System Assessment (PSA) on my Vostro 230 tower.

Pre-Boot System Assessment (PSA) Diagnostic Build 4524
Error code 2000-0146.
Drive Self-Test (DST) log contains previous error(s).

and the tests will not continue.

Do you think that doing a CMOS reset will clear up this indication?  I'm not sure where the error information is being saved.

The original drive, a Hitachi SATA, developed a SMART monitoring problem so when it's connected, the BIOS indicates a SMART error and requires pressing F1 to continue booting.

The newly installed drive is a new Western Digital WD Caviar Blue SATA 320GB and it tests good with the WD Data Lifeguard Tool and with the Dell 32-Bit Diagnostics. I would like to run the PSA test on it, but cannot.

Thanks.
